Etymology

Concurs entered Romanian in the nineteenth century from French concours, part of a wave of French borrowings that reshaped Romanian vocabulary. Concours itself descends from Latin concursus, a running together, from the verb concurrere, formed from con- (together) and currere (to run). The original sense was people converging in one place, which later narrowed to the idea of rivals converging to compete.
