Alega is a learned borrowing from Latin allegare, formed from ad- ('toward') and legare ('to depute, to bind by law', itself tied to lex, 'law'). Romanian picked it up during the nineteenth-century wave of Latin and French relatinization, alongside French alléguer. It sits in the same word family as the native verb a lega ('to tie'), since both ultimately trace to the same Latin root for binding by legal or formal obligation.
