Etymology

Ciudă entered Romanian from Old Slavic chudo, meaning wonder or marvel. The sense drifted from a strange or marvelous thing to the strangeness that provokes envy, and then to the sting of vexation or spite felt today. The adjective ciudat, meaning strange, comes from the same Slavic root and still carries the older sense.
