Etymology
Ciudat is built from the noun ciudă, meaning spite or vexation, plus the adjective-forming suffix -at, so it literally means having the quality of ciudă. Ciudă itself came into Romanian from a Slavic source close to Bulgarian and Old Church Slavonic чудо (chudo), which meant wonder or marvel. The sense drifted over time: from wonder, to vexation, to the modern meaning of odd or strange.
