Etymology
Săptămână comes from Latin septimana, an adjective built on septem, "seven," that came to mean "a period of seven days." This Latin word replaced the older Roman eight-day market cycle once the seven-day week spread through the Roman world under Eastern and Christian influence. Romanian kept the word almost unchanged, unlike its Western Romance sisters, which shortened it over time.
