Etymology
"Plec" is the first person singular present of the verb "a pleca," which comes from Latin "plicare," meaning to fold or bend. The link runs through the old phrase "a pleca capul," to bow the head, a gesture of leave-taking. Over time the sense narrowed from bowing to the act of departing itself, which is now the verb's main meaning in Romanian. The same Latin root gave Italian "piegare" and French "plier," both of which kept the literal sense of folding.
