Etymology
Plecat is the past participle of a pleca, the standard Romanian verb for leaving or setting off. The verb traces to Latin plicare, meaning to fold, which in popular Latin also took on the sense of bending or inclining the body. Romanian narrowed that bending sense toward bowing down and then, by extension, setting out on a journey, a shift also visible in the related verb a se pleca, to bow.
