Capitol comes from Latin capitulum, a diminutive of caput (head), which came to mean a small division of a text, since each section began with its own heading. Romanian took the word in the 19th century, during the push to re-latinize its vocabulary, most likely by way of French chapitre or directly from Latin. It kept the neuter gender typical of Latin loanwords describing objects and concepts rather than people.
