Etymology
Colegă is the feminine form of coleg, borrowed from French collègue, which in turn comes from Latin collega. In Latin, collega meant a partner chosen to hold office alongside someone else, built from the prefix com- (together) and a root tied to legare and legere, verbs of choosing and deputing. Romanian added the standard feminine noun ending -ă to mark the female counterpart of coleg.
