Etymology

Coleg entered Romanian mainly through French collègue, reinforced by the learned Latin term collega. In Latin, collega meant a person holding office jointly with another, built from com- (together) and legare (to depute, to send with a commission), a word tied to lex (law). Romanian broadened the old administrative sense to cover any co-worker, teammate, or classmate.
