Etymology

Împușcat is the past participle of a împușca, meaning to shoot. The verb is built from the prefix în- and pușcă, the Romanian word for gun. Pușcă itself came into Romanian from South Slavic, where forms like Bulgarian and Serbian puška also mean gun. The participle therefore means, quite literally, hit by the gun.
