Așteaptă is the third-person present form of a aștepta, meaning to wait. The verb comes from Vulgar Latin astectare, built from the prefix ad- (toward) and spectare (to watch, look out for), itself a frequentative of specere (to look). Italian kept the same base in aspettare, also meaning to wait, so the two languages are direct siblings on this word, while Spanish and Portuguese instead use esperar, from a different Latin root (sperare, to hope).
