Etymology

Carne comes from Latin caro, carnis, meaning flesh or meat. The word passed directly into Romanian along with the rest of the core Latin vocabulary that survived the Roman presence in Dacia. It kept its basic meaning of animal flesh used as food, unlike some Romance cognates that broadened to mean body or flesh in general.
