Etymology
Religios entered Romanian from French religieux, itself from Latin religiosus, the adjective built on religio, "religion, reverence for the sacred." The origin of religio itself is debated among Latin scholars: some trace it to religare, "to bind fast," others to relegere, "to go over again, to be careful about." Romanian took the word as part of a broad wave of French and Latin-based vocabulary that reshaped its educated register in the 19th century.
