Etymology
Sus comes from Latin sursum, meaning upward or on high. Sursum is a contraction of subvorsum, built from sub (from below) and the participle of vertere (to turn), so the original sense was something turned upward from below. Romanian kept this Latin adverb almost unchanged, while other Romance languages went different ways: Italian shortened it to su, and French kept sus only in fossilized expressions.
