Etymology
Câștigat is the past participle of a câștiga, "to win" or "to earn". Romanian dictionaries trace the verb to a reconstructed Vulgar Latin form of castigare, the same source as the English word "castigate". In classical Latin castigare meant "to correct" or "to punish", but in popular Latin and early Romanian the sense drifted toward "to strive for and obtain", eventually settling on "to win" or "to earn". The shift from punishment to reward is unusual, but it is the accepted account of this word's history.
