Etymology
The word entered Romanian from French "cellule" in the 19th century, as part of a wave of scientific and administrative vocabulary borrowed during the modernization of Romanian. French "cellule" comes from Latin "cellula", a diminutive of "cella" meaning a small room or chamber, such as a monk's cell or a storage room. The biological sense, a small enclosed unit of living matter, was a 17th-century extension of that older meaning of a small enclosed space.
