Etymology

Romanian borrowed "controla" from French "contrôler" during the wave of 19th-century modernization that reshaped much of the language's vocabulary. The French verb goes back to "contre-rôle," a duplicate register kept to verify an original one, from Latin "contra" (against) and "rotulus" (a small roll or scroll). The underlying idea is checking one record against another.
