Etymology
Romanian borrowed "control" from French "contrôle" in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French administrative and technical vocabulary. The French word itself goes back to Medieval Latin "contrarotulus", a duplicate register kept to verify an original account. The sense shifted over time from "a checking document" to the general modern idea of oversight or command.
