Etymology
Aștept is the first person singular present of a aștepta, the standard Romanian verb for to wait. Romanian dictionaries trace it to Latin adspectare, a frequentative form of adspicere meaning to look at or watch closely. The sense shifted from watching to watching for someone or something, and eventually to simply waiting. The Latin cluster -sp- became -șt- in Romanian, a regular sound change also seen in other inherited words.
