Etymology
Celular comes from French cellulaire, itself built on Latin cellula, the diminutive of cella, meaning a small room or chamber. Romanian took the word during its 19th-century wave of French and Latin borrowings, when much of its modern scientific and technical vocabulary was formed. The biological sense (relating to living cells) came first; the telecom sense (as in telefon celular) followed once mobile networks, built from geographic cells, spread in the late 20th century.
