Word family
Etymology
Chiar comes from the Latin adjective clarus, meaning clear or bright. In popular spoken Latin the word passed into Romanian with a sound shift that turned cl- into chi-, the same shift seen in Italian chiaro. Over time the meaning drifted from clear or evident to a marker of emphasis: really, exactly, even. Romanian kept clarus twice, once as this inherited word chiar and once as the later, more learned borrowing clar, which still means clear.
