Romanian "lua" comes from Latin "levare," which meant "to lift" or "to raise." In the shift from Latin to Romanian, the meaning moved from lifting something to carrying it off, and settled on the plain sense of taking. Regular sound changes, including the loss of the intervocalic v, turned "levare" into "lua." Other Romance languages kept the same Latin root but split off in different directions of meaning.
