Etymology
Luat is the past participle of a lua, to take. The verb descends from Latin levare, to lift or raise, which in Vulgar Latin drifted toward the sense of picking something up and, eventually, taking it. The ending -at is the ordinary past-participle marker for Romanian first-conjugation verbs.
