Etymology
Rămas is the past participle of a rămâne, "to remain, stay behind," which comes from Vulgar Latin remanere. That Latin verb combines re- (back, in place) with manere (to stay, dwell). Romanian kept this Latin verb whole, while French replaced it with rester (from restare) and only kept traces of manere in words like demeure. The form rămas still carries the old Latin perfect stem mans-, visible in remansus.
