Etymology
Romanian borrowed "cifră" from French "chiffre" in the modern era, part of a wave of French vocabulary that reshaped Romanian in the 19th century. French "chiffre" itself traces back through Medieval Latin "cifra" to Arabic "sifr," meaning zero or empty. That Arabic term entered Europe alongside the Hindu-Arabic numeral system and also gave English the word "cipher" and, by a separate route through Italian, the word "zero."
