Etymology
Cinste comes from Old Slavonic chĭstĭ (honor, respect), borrowed into Romanian during the long period when Church Slavonic served as the liturgical and administrative language in the medieval Romanian principalities. The word kept its core sense of moral honor and personal integrity. Over time it also picked up the informal sense of treating someone to food or drink, likely from the idea of honoring a guest.
