Etymology
Chei entered Romanian from French quai during the nineteenth century, when Romanian absorbed many French terms tied to urban planning and engineering. French quai itself goes back to an Old North French word for an embankment along water. The word kept its narrow, technical sense in Romanian: a built structure for ships or boats to dock against.
