Etymology
Romanian borrowed "document" from French "document", which comes from Latin "documentum", meaning a lesson or proof. The Latin word derives from "docere", to teach, plus the suffix "-mentum", which marks the result of an action. So a document was originally something that teaches or proves a point, before it narrowed to mean an official written paper.
