Etymology
Dumneata comes from the phrase domnia ta, literally your lordship. Over centuries of everyday use, Romanian speakers fused the two words into one, and the vowels wore down into the compact form used today. The same pattern produced a whole family of polite pronouns: dumnealui, dumneaei, dumneavoastră, and dumnealor. The root domn traces back to Latin dominus, meaning lord or master.
