Etymology
Încheia is built inside Romanian from the prefix în-, the noun cheie ("key"), and the infinitive ending -a. Cheie itself comes from Latin clavis, "key". The verb first meant to fasten something shut, as with a lock or a buckle, and later widened to cover ending a meeting, closing a period of time, or signing a contract. The same root cheie also shows up in Romanian words for a lock mechanism and for a body joint.
