Comandant entered Romanian in the 19th century from French commandant, part of a wave of French and Italian loanwords that reshaped Romanian vocabulary away from earlier Slavic and Turkish terms. The French word itself comes from the verb commander, which goes back to Vulgar Latin, blending commendare (to entrust) with mandare (to order). Mandare in turn combines manus (hand) with dare (to give), so the deep sense is something like to place into someone's hand.
