Etymology

Comandă comes from the verb a comanda, which Romanian borrowed from French commander (and reinforced by Italian comandare). Both trace back to Vulgar Latin *commandare, a strengthened form of mandare, meaning to entrust or order. Mandare itself joins manus, hand, with dare, to give, so the underlying image is placing something in someone's hand for them to carry out.
