Etymology
Rece comes from the Latin adjective recens, which meant fresh or recent. Over time its meaning narrowed toward freshly drawn water, and from there to the sensation of cold itself. This is why Romanian, alone among the Romance languages, does not use a descendant of Latin frigidus for cold.
