Etymology

Comunicare is the long infinitive of the verb a comunica, used in Romanian as an ordinary noun. The verb was borrowed from French communiquer in the 19th century, during Romania's push to re-Latinize its vocabulary after centuries of Slavic and Ottoman influence. It ultimately traces to Latin communicare, to share or make common, built on communis, common. The Proto-Indo-European root behind communis is *mei-, meaning to change or exchange.
