Etymology
Concediu entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of a wave of French and Italian borrowings, from French congé and Italian congedo. Both trace back to Latin commeatus, a noun built on com- (together, with) and meare (to go, pass), which originally denoted permission to leave a post, especially in military use. Over time the word narrowed to its modern sense of authorized time away from work.
