Etymology
Concediat is the past participle of a concedia, "to dismiss from a job." Romanian borrowed the verb from French congédier in the nineteenth century, a period when Romanian absorbed many French words during its modernization. Congédier comes from congé, "leave" or "notice," which traces back to Latin commeatus, a furlough granted to soldiers. That same Latin root also gave Romanian concediu, "vacation," so the two words share an ancestor despite their opposite associations today.
