Etymology
Sâmbătă comes from Vulgar Latin sambata, a variant of sabbatum. Latin borrowed the word from Greek sabbaton, which in turn came from Hebrew shabbat, the day of rest. Romanian is unusual among Romance languages in shifting this word to mean Saturday rather than keeping a separate term for the Sabbath.
