Etymology
Mană entered Romanian from Latin manna, which came from Greek manna, which in turn came from Hebrew mān, the food the Bible says fell from the sky to feed the Israelites in the desert. Because it appeared without warning and solved a desperate need, the word grew a second, figurative sense in Romanian: an unexpected stroke of luck. The idiom a pica mană din cer, to fall like manna from heaven, still carries that meaning today.
