Etymology
Romanian borrowed "superior" from Latin superior, the comparative form of superus, meaning "above" or "upper". The word entered Romanian during the nineteenth-century wave of relatinization, when scholars deliberately drew new vocabulary from Latin and French to replace or supplement older Slavic-derived terms. It kept its Latin comparative sense of "higher" or "above others" in rank, quality, or position.
