Etymology

Romanian "turn" goes back to Latin "turris" (tower), the same source that gave Italian "torre", French "tour" and Spanish "torre". Most dictionaries note that the Romanian form likely reached the language through an Old Slavic intermediary rather than directly from spoken Latin, which explains the added final "-n". The ultimate origin of "turris" itself is uncertain and may predate Indo-European languages in the Mediterranean area.
