Etymology

Grădină entered Romanian from Slavic, most likely Old Church Slavonic or an early South Slavic form related to gradъ, meaning a fortified or enclosed place. The word kept its Slavic shape almost intact, unlike much of the Latin-based Romanian vocabulary. The underlying sense, an enclosed plot of land, is what carried over into the modern meaning of garden.
