Etymology

Castel entered Romanian in the modern era as a borrowing from French château (with the form shaped by Italian castello), part of the wave of Western Romance vocabulary that reshaped Romanian during the 19th century. Both source words go back to Latin castellum, a diminutive of castrum, meaning a fortified camp or fort. Romanian already had a separate, older word for a fortified stronghold, cetate, so castel took on the narrower sense of a grand residential castle or chateau.
