Romanian borrowed grămadă from Slavic, where a form like gramada/gromada meant a heap or mound of piled-up matter. The word entered Romanian through long contact with Slavic-speaking neighbors and settled into everyday use for physical piles and, by extension, large quantities. Its root is not native Latin, which is why it does not resemble other Romance heap-words like the French tas or Italian mucchio.
