Etymology
Rețetă entered Romanian through French recette and German Rezept, both of which trace back to Latin recepta, the feminine past participle of recipere, meaning to take back or receive. The Latin sense of a thing received or set down evolved in medicine into the written instructions a doctor hands a patient, and in cooking into the written instructions for a dish. Romanian kept both senses under one word, unlike English, which split them into recipe and prescription.
