Etymology
Romanian "nevoie" comes from the medieval Slavic word "nevolja", built from "ne-" (not) and "volja" (will). The original sense was something like lack of will or forced state, close to bondage or hardship. Over time in Romanian it narrowed to "need, necessity", the modern everyday sense. The plural "nevoi" follows the regular pattern for feminine nouns ending in -e.
