Etymology
Porumb is the same word that once meant wood pigeon in Romanian, from Latin palumbes. Before maize arrived from the Americas, Romanian described the new grain with a phrase built on this bird word, likely because dried cobs and kernels showed the same grey-blue tone as pigeon feathers. Over time the phrase shortened to porumb alone, and the meaning corn pushed out the older bird sense in everyday speech, which survives instead in the diminutive porumbel.
