Etymology
Convingere is the noun form of the verb a convinge, "to convince", built by adding the deverbal suffix -re to the verb stem. A convinge comes from Latin convincere, from con- ("together, thoroughly") and vincere ("to conquer, defeat"). The original sense was to defeat someone in an argument, which shifted to mean winning them over to a belief.
