Etymology
Romanian borrowed "stadiu" from French "stade", which in its figurative sense means a stage or phase of development. French "stade" in turn goes back to Latin "stadium" and Greek "stadion", originally a fixed-length running track used in Greek athletic contests. The shift from a physical distance marker to an abstract phase happened in French before the word reached Romanian in the modern era.
