Etymology

Romanian borrowed "limuzină" from French "limousine" in the twentieth century, along with the car itself. The French word first named a hooded cloak worn by shepherds in the Limousin region. Around 1900 the term shifted to describe a car body with an enclosed passenger compartment, whose roofline recalled that hood. Romanian kept the French form and simply adapted the spelling and the feminine noun ending.
